Yet girls’ involvement in the empire was anything but straightforward. They navigated, negotiated, and resisted systems of colonial power. This presentation explores girls’ multifaceted roles in the British Empire through a study of the Girls’ Friendly Society, a British organization that grew into a global society with branches throughout the empire. Focusing specifically on the Society’s emigration and imperial education programs, this presentation explores the everyday, intimate politics that sustained colonial rule and argues that understandings of colonialism remain incomplete without serious consideration of girls and their experiences.</p><p><span>Sponsored by the Hankey Center for the History of Women’s Education.</span></p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-event-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/event-type/events" hreflang="en">Events</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/event-type/hankey-center-events" hreflang="en">Hankey Center Events</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-event-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/juicebox_small/public/2026-02/flyer.png?itok=OYxV52dP" width="618" height="800" alt="Women's History Wednesdays" class="image-style-juicebox-small"> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-sidebars field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__item"> <div class="field field--name-field-sidebar-second field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><div class="paragraph paragraph--type--block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="field field--name-field-block field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><ul><li><a href="https://node/2440">Directions</a></li><li><a href="https://www.wilson.edu/sites/default/files/2024-07/24-25_ParkingMap.pdf">Campus and Parking Map</a></li><li><a href="https://www.wilson.edu/parking-wilson">Campus Parking</a></li><li><a href="/node/1237">Local Accommodations</a></li><li><a href="/node/1729">Academic Calendar and Events</a></li></ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Thu, 19 Feb 2026 20:26:32 +0000 Jenny 7375 at Margaret Chase Smith, Civic Education, and 91ɫƬ /margaret-chase-smith-civic-education-and-wilson-college <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Margaret Chase Smith, Civic Education, and 91ɫƬ</span> <div class="field field--name-field-event-date field--type-daterange field--label-hidden field__item"> Wednesday, March 11, 2026 - 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Jenny</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2026-02-19T15:18:46-05:00" title="Thursday, February 19, 2026 - 15:18" class="datetime">Thu, 02/19/2026 - 15:18</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-event-location field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><a href="/event-location/lenfest-learning-commons-john-stewart-memorial-library" hreflang="en">Lenfest Learning Commons, John Stewart Memorial Library</a></div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><h3><strong>Women’s History Wednesdays</strong></h3><p><strong>Margaret Chase Smith, Civic Education, and 91ɫƬ</strong><br><em>presented by Maxine Wagenhoffer, Director of the Hankey Center for the History of Women’s Education and Assistant Professor of History</em><br>March 11, 2026 at 2 p.m. in Lenfest Learning Commons, John Stewart Memorial Library<br><br>This presentation focuses on the relationship that Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of the U.S. Congress, had with 91ɫƬ. Yet the United States is home to hundreds of psychedelic churches that hold these powerful psychoactive substances as sacred. Drawing on two years of ethnographic research, this talk explores the beliefs, practices, and communities that comprise this rapidly growing corner of America's religious landscape—one that challenges us to reconsider what both drugs and religion are in the 21st century.</p><p>Presented by Jeffrey Breau, Program Lead for Psychedelics and Spirituality, Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School</p><p><strong>Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at 11 a.m. to noon</strong><br><strong>Lenfest Learning Commons in&nbsp;John Stewart Memorial Library, 91ɫƬ</strong><br><strong>This event is open to the public and free of charge.&nbsp;</strong></p><p>Visit <a href="https://www.wilson.edu/orr-forum">https://www.wilson.edu/orr-forum</a> for more information.&nbsp;</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-event-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/event-type/events" hreflang="en">Events</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-event-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/juicebox_small/public/2026-02/banner_0.png?itok=uA2F4HvJ" width="800" height="370" alt="Orr Forum 2026" class="image-style-juicebox-small"> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-sidebars field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__item"> <div class="field field--name-field-sidebar-second field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><div class="paragraph paragraph--type--block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="field field--name-field-block field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><ul><li><a href="https://node/2440">Directions</a></li><li><a href="https://www.wilson.edu/sites/default/files/2024-07/24-25_ParkingMap.pdf">Campus and Parking Map</a></li><li><a href="https://www.wilson.edu/parking-wilson">Campus Parking</a></li><li><a href="/node/1237">Local Accommodations</a></li><li><a href="/node/1729">Academic Calendar and Events</a></li></ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 10 Feb 2026 16:15:46 +0000 Jenny 7365 at Veterinary Nursing Fall Career Fair 2025 /veterinary-nursing-fall-career-fair-2025 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Veterinary Nursing Fall Career Fair 2025</span> <div class="field field--name-field-event-date field--type-daterange field--label-hidden field__item"> Wednesday, October 22, 2025 - 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Jenny</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2025-09-16T11:23:19-04:00" title="Tuesday, September 16, 2025 - 11:23" class="datetime">Tue, 09/16/2025 - 11:23</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-event-location field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><a href="/event-location/lenfest-learning-commons-john-stewart-memorial-library" hreflang="en">Lenfest Learning Commons, John Stewart Memorial Library</a></div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The Veterinary Nursing Fall Career Fair 2025 will take place on Wednesday, October 22 from 2 to 4:30 p.m in Lenfest Learning Commons in John Stewart Memorial Library at 91ɫƬ.&nbsp;</p><p>Students - <span>Don't miss this opportunity to learn about Veterinary Nursing Careers today and in the future! Drawing on comparative data between rural and urban contexts, participants will explore how factors such as persistent poverty, occupational hazards, and intergenerational trauma exacerbate the opioid epidemic outside metropolitan areas. The session will also highlight the pivotal role of first responders and local stakeholders in reducing overdose fatalities, emphasizing the need for community-centered approaches to address opioid misuse in rural regions.</p><p><strong>Learning Objectives:</strong></p><ol><li><strong>Identify Key Rural Social Drivers of Health</strong><br>Participants will be able to define and discuss at least three rural SDOH (e.g., poverty, geographic isolation, occupational hazards) that directly influence opioid use patterns and overdose risks.</li><li><strong>Compare Rural vs. Urban Opioid Dynamics</strong><br>Participants will learn to differentiate how unique elements of rural living—such as sparse healthcare infrastructure and greater social stigma—intersect with opioid misuse, resulting in higher rates of opioid-related mortality compared to urban areas.</li><li><strong>Outline Community-Centered Strategies</strong><br>Participants will be able to describe evidence-based, culturally responsive interventions and policies that empower rural first responders, promote naloxone training, and improve health literacy to mitigate the opioid crisis in resource-limited settings.</li></ol><p><strong>Tonne McCoy, Technical Assistance Director for the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health</strong><br>Tonne is a doctoral candidate in experimental psychology with an emphasis on rural health at Idaho State University.
