Empire’s Daughters: Girls and Britain’s Colonial Past

Girls are often consigned to the shadows in histories of the British Empire, but they nevertheless played a vital role as migrants, settlers, laborers, and creators of colonial knowledge. Yet girls’ involvement in the empire was anything but straightforward. They navigated, negotiated, and resisted systems of colonial power. This presentation explores girls’ multifaceted roles in the British Empire through a study of the Girls’ Friendly Society, a British organization that grew into a global society with branches throughout the empire. Focusing specifically on the Society’s emigration and imperial education programs, this presentation explores the everyday, intimate politics that sustained colonial rule and argues that understandings of colonialism remain incomplete without serious consideration of girls and their experiences.

This presentation focuses on the relationship that Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of the U.S. Congress, had with 91ɫ��Ƭ. In 1945, Smith participated in 91ɫ��Ƭ’s seventy-fifth anniversary celebration. Smith returned to campus several times throughout the twentieth century, serving as a source of energy and political inspiration for Wilson women. Ultimately, this presentation highlights Smith’s impact on the 91ɫ��Ƭ community over the years.

For many, psychedelics and religion make strange—even heretical—bedfellows. Yet the United States is home to hundreds of psychedelic churches that hold these powerful psychoactive substances as sacred. Drawing on two years of ethnographic research, this talk explores the beliefs, practices, and communities that comprise this rapidly growing corner of America's religious landscape—one that challenges us to reconsider what both drugs and religion are in the 21st century.

Rural Social Drivers of Health and the Opioid Epidemic: An Urban–Rural Perspective with Guest Speaker: Tonne McCoy, Technical Assistance Director for the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health

This one-hour webinar will examine how rural social drivers of health (SDOH)—such as economic constraints, cultural norms, and limited healthcare access—contribute to the disproportionately high rates of opioid-related harm in rural America. Drawing on comparative data between rural and urban contexts, participants will explore how factors such as persistent poverty, occupational hazards, and intergenerational trauma exacerbate the opioid epidemic outside metropolitan areas. The session will also highlight the pivotal role of first responders and local stakeholders in reducing overdose fatalities, emphasizing the need for community-centered approaches to address opioid misuse in rural regions.

Learning Objectives:

Identify Key Rural Social Drivers of Health
Participants will be able to define and discuss at least three rural SDOH (e.g., poverty, geographic isolation, occupational hazards) that directly influence opioid use patterns and overdose risks.
Compare Rural vs. Urban Opioid Dynamics
Participants will learn to differentiate how unique elements of rural living—such as sparse healthcare infrastructure and greater social stigma—intersect with opioid misuse, resulting in higher rates of opioid-related mortality compared to urban areas.
Outline Community-Centered Strategies
Participants will be able to describe evidence-based, culturally responsive interventions and policies that empower rural first responders, promote naloxone training, and improve health literacy to mitigate the opioid crisis in resource-limited settings.

Tonne McCoy, Technical Assistance Director for the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health
Tonne is a doctoral candidate in experimental psychology with an emphasis on rural health at Idaho State University. She is the technical assistance director for the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH). With nearly a decade of rural health experience and technical expertise in Rural Health Clinic program compliance, Lean Six Sigma, and empirical research, Tonne’s work uses her knowledge and experience to help the 50 SORH in the nation develop rural programming expertise, ultimately helping their rural communities become and remain more well.

Adam DelMarcelle, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design and academic curator Matthew Clay-Robison will be discussing the work of artist Purvis Young and the importance of academic galleries and museums.

This event is free and open to the public.

The interactive exhibition, “Cut Through — Purvis Young: Stories of Overtown.” is on display on the ground and first floor of John Stewart Memorial Library.

Students in DelMarcelle's Art History and Graphic Design classes collaborated to curate, research, write, and develop the system for the exhibition design, which includes a Spotify playlist and several works from the artist.

Young was an American artist from the Overtown neighborhood in Miami, Florida. His art blended painting and drawing with collaged elements utilizing everyday found materials.

Matthew Clay-Robison teaches at York College in Pennsylvania and is also the gallery director of their multiple locations. His work can also be found in the permanent and private collections of the Library of Congress, the Dr. David C. Driskell Collection, and the Dr. Robert E. Steele Collection. Mathew was also recently a Fullbright research scholar in Indonesia.
